NOTE: ’Locked In' is my first short film and is close to my own experience and observation of the current plight of refugees and the process of asylum.
I was particularly interested in the angle of political asylum seekers in the UK detention centre on the fast track system facing imminent deportation. I always wondered at the way people’s life is being decided within the four walls of a detention centre. How this situation of powerlessness is compounded by fear to return, and mentally getting ready for torture or death if deported. All this in the context of the dehumanising asylum process itself.
With this curiosity I personally interviewed asylum seekers, lawyers, NGOs and law enforcement officers to create a factual drama with a deep human connection, making it both artistically valid and a socially relevant film.
I felt the story of asylum seekers in UK detention centres should be told.
